But, what does close reading look like? And how do you get a reluctant and struggling adolescent reader to read the same text more than once and pay close attention to the details? It is quite a challenge, but these go-to strategies have helped me enable my students, across grades 7-12, uncover the multiple meanings of text. With the shift to Common Core State Standards, there has been lots of talk of “close reading.” As a reading specialist, my responsibility is to help my students reach toward grade level with their reading skills, which most certainly involves having them read texts closely. Graphing on the Coordinate Grid- Interactive Cand.3 Go-To Close Reading Strategies by Abi Frost.Notice and Note: Using Inner Conversation to Moni.I used the Pixar short Presto which is about a magician and the conflicts between his bunny and himself. For contrast and contradiction we are looking at WHY would the character act this way? It allows students to pause in their thinking and make inferences and connections within the text.Īfter explaining the concept and creating our anchor charts, I began by showing my students a video that contained several contrasts and contraditions. The key to the signpost is in the anchor question. An author will use this in a novel or story for character development, to show internal conflict, theme, or show a relationship between the setting and the plot of the story. This helped to give them ownership in their learning, and a place to refer back to for anchor questions.Ĭontrast and Contradiction is the idea that there is a contrast between what we would EXPECT a character to be doing and what the character actually does. We created an anchor chart which defines the signpost, and I gave my students a tabbed book for their interactive notebooks where they could create an anchor chart for each signpost as well. I began the signposts by teaching Contrast and Contradictions. They feel a little like detectives as they leave tracks, and make connections. They are excited to dicuss a book, or story, or poem with their classmates. I've begun teaching the sign posts to my students, and they are excited about reading again. It challenges students to dig deeper into text, and find the authenticity behind what they are reading. It justifies so many things that I believe about reading, and how to create a community of readers in your classroom. I basically devoured this book when I began reading it. These signposts, or elements that occur in most genres of good literature, help students make connection to text and think authentically about what they are reading, instead of just "finishing" a book. In the book, Beers and Probst discuss the idea of six signposts that are apparent in good literature. Probst is a perfect book for educators who want students to connect with a story, and monitor their own comprehension. Notice & Note: Strategies for Close Reading by Kylene Beers and Robert E. I teach my students that as readers they must leave tracks within their thinking. I start with an anchor chart of what that "voice in your head" is doing while you are reading and we discuss how readers who pay attention to their thinking, are more apt to learn, understand and remember what they read. One of the best ways I've found to do this is by teaching my students about the inner conversation that good readers have with themselves. Even though I teach sixth grade, I have to spend a lot of time in my reading block modeling and teaching students how to monitor their reading comprehension.

I was not forewarned that there was a train track yards from the back of the hotel and the room shook when trains passed which also hooted three times every time they went by (2 - 3 per hour and through the night). Not knowing the area and wanting to stay somewhere close to the Organ Pipe NP I booked this Best Western over their internet. I will stop in Tucson or Yuma next time I need a room nearby. The unit was still spewing pieces of this stuff after he left. The "maintenance" person came in and poked around, swept up the chunks, and left. The air conditioner/heater was spewing out dirty chunks of some lint like substance. You could feel the room vibrate when the train went by. Each one blasted a loud horn which woke me, but not my wife. There were at least 5 trains that rolled through after I turned the lights out. The railroad tracks must be right behind the hotel. We could hear footsteps outside our room and the traffic from the street. This cleared after about 2 hours and was fine until morning when we could smell it again, but less strong. It was so bad it was like a feed lot was next door. The Bad: When we first arrived, the outside air smelled strongly like cow manure. On the flip side, there was a lot to complain about. The breakfast food was excellent and the wait staff was friendly and competent. I really enjoyed my chicken fried steak and eggs. We were pleasantly surprised to find that our free "continental" breakfast was actually a full cooked breakfast. The Good: The room was spacious and the beds were comfortable. I try to see the positive, so here's my best shot at the good aspects of our stay. I was traveling with my wife and 2 kids (3 and 7) to San Diego from Texas and decided to stay in Gila Bend to break up the trip. When we first arrived, the outside air smelled strongly like cow manure. The room was spacious and the beds were comfortable. Also strange was the surprisingly good 'gourmet pizza' at Little Italy across the street from the motel - not something we expected to find in a town like Gila Bend.I was traveling with my wife and 2 kids (3 and 7) to San Diego from Texas and decided to stay in Gila Bend to break up the trip. Reception didn't tell us the town was shutting off the water at 10am so a toilet that should have been flushed couldn't be (gross!) - when I went into reception to see what was happening she said she tried to call our room but we didn't answer (because we were at breakfast), but she didn't try to call the cell number she had! Free breakfast at the adjacent restaurant was a joke - terrible food (hashbrowns might have been cooked in rancid oil?), service was horrific from one woman that was positively foul and the sweet other woman couldn't quite overcome the foul one's barking at everyone - it was a strange scene. Shower didn't drain well at all so was standing in ankle-deep water almost the entire shower. Bathroom had a funky smell that wouldn't go away even with the window partially open. Railroad runs behind the motel & there is a busy road in front of it - it was loud. Old and dated motel with a quirky theme, but not worth it. 3000 BC were assembled using hard soldering. Soldering and brazing are thought to have originated very early in the history of metal-working, probably before 4000 BC. There is evidence that soldering was employed as early as 5,000 years ago in Mesopotamia. Origins Small figurine being created by soldering Soldering is an important skill for many industries and hobbies, and it requires a combination of technical knowledge and practical experience to achieve good results. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice of method depends on the application and the materials being joined. There are several methods of heating used in soldering, including soldering irons, torches, and hot air guns. Different types of solder require different temperatures to melt, and heating must be carefully controlled to avoid damaging the materials being joined or creating weak joints. In addition to the type of solder used, the temperature and method of heating also play a crucial role in the soldering process. Lead-free solder has also become more widely used in recent years due to health and environmental concerns associated with the use of lead. Common solder alloys include tin-lead, tin-silver, and tin-copper, among others. The solder used in the process can vary in composition, with different alloys used for different applications. It is also used in plumbing and metalwork, as well as in the manufacture of jewelry and other decorative items. Soldering is commonly used in the electronics industry for the manufacture and repair of printed circuit boards (PCBs) and other electronic components. The soldering process involves heating the surfaces to be joined and melting the solder, which is then allowed to cool and solidify, creating a strong and durable joint. Soldering ( US: / ˈ s ɒ d ər ɪ ŋ/ UK: / ˈ s oʊ l d ər ɪ ŋ/) is a process of joining two metal surfaces together using a filler metal called solder. For thermocouple contacts, see Cold junction (thermocouple). In addition, the player can customize their character's appearance and clothing. The seventh-generation console versions in particular were singled-out for their lack of a campaign and numerous features, as well as them being online-only. However, it was also criticized for its story and lack of innovation.
